The biggest festival in Vietnam by far, this event marks the Vietnamese lunar new year. Held on the same day as Chinese New Year, it lasts for three days. Ho Chi Minh City: When to go

This is a part-religious festival and part-excuse for a party. Folk songs, lion dances, floating lamps on the river, chess and handicrafts are just some of the events. The event honours an Avalokiesvara Bodhisattva statue within a cave in the Marble Mountains.

Hoa Lu

The former capital of Hoa Lu, south of Hanoi, comes alive every April to remember King Dinh Tien Hoang, who united the country, and King Le Dai Hanh, who saw off foreign invaders. A mock battle, lighting of incense sticks and exhibition of Chinese characters are the highlights.

Haiphong

One of the more extreme events on the calendar is the buffalo fighting that takes place in the northern port of Haiphong. The diet, preparation and training that goes on before this event is meticulous, with qualifying matches being held in May ahead of the main festival. The buffaloes go head-to-head (sometimes literally) until one gives up and the other progresses to the next round, until a champion is declared.
